Light bar customisation
The DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DualShock 4 have a programmable light bar. InputConfig can set it from the controller chip at the top of the sidebar, and a preset can carry its own colour so the bar tells you which layout is running.
Picking a colour
- Click the controller chip in the sidebar.
- Pick a preset colour, or expand Custom Colour for the full picker.
- Set brightness to Off, Dim, or Bright.
- Press RGB Cycle if you want the bar to run through the hues continuously.
A colour per preset
Presets created by the Smart Preset Maker for games often set a colour that matches the game. Any preset can have one: it is applied when the preset activates, so a glance at the controller says whether the desktop layout or the game layout is live. The Anki and Minecraft built-in presets carry colours as examples.
Why it flickers when the colour changes
InputConfig briefly resets the controller connection to send the new colour, which takes about a second. Once the colour is applied the connection is back to normal. Over Bluetooth the app uses the controller's own tagging so the colour sticks.
Questions
Can I turn the light off completely?
Yes, set brightness to Off. The player indicator LEDs under the touchpad are controlled by macOS and stay as they are.
Does this work on Xbox or Switch controllers?
No, they have no colour light bar. The DualSense family and the DualShock 4 are the ones with a programmable bar.
