DualSense Edge extra buttons
Apple's controller framework stops at the standard PlayStation layout, so on most Mac software the Edge's back paddles and FN buttons do nothing. InputConfig reads them straight from the controller's own data stream alongside the normal inputs, on both Bluetooth and USB, so they bind like any other button.
Binding a paddle
- Open a preset in the editor and add a row, or press Scan on an existing one.
- Press the paddle or FN button. The row is bound to it.
- Choose the output. A paddle is a good home for an Emergency Stop output, a chord modifier, or a Pause Motion While Held action for gyro aim, because it has no job of its own in most games.
The Live Visualizer shows the extras as chips that light up when pressed, which is the quickest way to confirm the Mac is seeing them.
Button numbers
| Control | Button index |
|---|---|
| Left Paddle | 16 |
| Right Paddle | 17 |
| FN left | 20 |
| FN right | 21 |
| Mute | 15 |
You never need the numbers if you use Scan, but they are what the editor shows in the input menu and what a preset file stores.
If the extra buttons stop responding
A Bluetooth session that has been alive for a long time can wedge into a state where the extras go quiet while sticks and face buttons keep working. Hold the PS button to power the controller off, turn it back on, and they return. The paddles are detachable; an empty rear socket reports nothing, which is worth checking before anything else.
Paddle assignments made on a PS5
If you used Sony's profile tool on a PS5 to make a paddle mirror another button, the controller sends both: the mirrored button and the paddle bit. Unassigned paddles still report presses to InputConfig, so they are bindable even when they do nothing anywhere else. If a paddle seems to fire two things at once, that is a mirror assignment on the controller, and the fix is to clear it on the PS5 or to bind the mirrored button to nothing in the preset.
Everything else on the Edge
The light bar, haptics, the touchpad, the gyroscope, the microphone mute button, and the stick modules all work the same as on a standard DualSense. Stick caps and the stick module tension do not change anything on the Mac side; if you swap a module, run the Calibrate button on a stick row to reset its deadzone.
Questions
Do the paddles work over Bluetooth?
Yes. Both the paddles and FN buttons are read over Bluetooth and USB-C.
Can I map the two FN buttons to different things?
Yes, they are separate inputs, button 20 and button 21.
Does the DualShock 4 have any of these?
No. The DualShock 4 has no paddles or FN buttons, but its touchpad, light bar, and gyroscope all work.
