Roblox camera and shift lock on a Mac

Press the Left and Right arrow keys to turn Roblox's camera on a MacBook, or turn on shift lock so the camera follows the trackpad. The camera is the awkward part on a trackpad, because it only turns while the right mouse button is held, and a trackpad has no right button to hold while you move. I will go through the ways round it that need nothing installed, shift lock and why it stops working, and a controller if you would rather hold a pad. This is about the in-game camera, the view of your character, not the webcam.

Turn the camera without a mouse

Roblox's standard controls give you three ways, and none needs a right button:

  • Left and Right arrow keys. They turn the camera. This is the easiest on a MacBook: WASD with the left hand, arrows with the right.
  • I and O. They zoom in and out. Zoom all the way in and you are in first person, where the camera follows the trackpad with no click at all.
  • Shift lock. Makes the camera follow the trackpad in third person. See turn on shift lock.

These are Roblox's defaults. An experience that builds its own camera can change them.

Right click on a MacBook

macOS calls it secondary click. Click with two fingers, or in System Settings, Trackpad, set Secondary click to the bottom right or bottom left corner. Holding a two-finger click while you also slide a finger is hard on a trackpad, which is why the arrow keys and shift lock are the better camera controls.

Turn on shift lock

  • You: Open the Roblox menu with Escape or the Roblox icon at the top left, go to Settings, and switch Shift Lock Switch on. Back in the experience, press Shift.
  • Roblox: Locks the pointer, turns your character to face where the camera faces, and turns the view as you move a finger on the trackpad.
  • Check: Press Shift again to let go.

If shift lock is not working

Four causes, from Roblox's own rules for when shift lock is allowed. Climb this ladder, smallest step first:

  1. Shift Lock Switch is off. Pressing Shift does nothing until it is on in Settings.
  2. Movement Mode is Click to Move. Shift lock is unavailable in that mode. Set Movement Mode back to Default in Settings.
  3. Roblox thinks you are on a controller. Shift lock only works while Roblox believes you are playing with keyboard and mouse. If a controller is connected and in use, it can switch shift lock off. Put the pad down and touch the keyboard, or play that experience fully on the pad, where the right stick turns the camera anyway.
  4. The experience turned it off. Creators can disable shift lock. Nothing on the Mac brings it back there.

Know Roblox's keys on a Mac

The standard keys are the same as on a PC, and on a Mac keyboard there is nothing to change: Command is not used, and Shift is Shift.

  • Move. WASD or the Up and Down arrows.
  • Jump. Space.
  • Camera. Left and Right arrows turn it, I and O zoom.
  • Shift lock. Shift.
  • Tools. The number keys pick them from the hotbar.
  • Chat and menu. Slash opens chat and Escape opens the menu.

Play it with a controller instead

A controller solves the camera outright. Roblox reads Xbox and PlayStation pads on a Mac, and the right stick turns the view with no button held: see how to play Roblox with a controller on a Mac.

For experiences built only for keyboard and mouse, InputConfig sends Roblox those keys and the mouse from the pad. I built it because my hands do not work well, and a trackpad drag is exactly the kind of thing it takes off them. The Roblox layout is ready to use, and it is free, with no account.

The short version

  • Turn. Use the Left and Right arrow keys.
  • Follow the trackpad. Turn Shift lock on in Settings and press Shift, or zoom all the way in with I.
  • Shift lock refuses. Check the switch and Movement Mode, and put the controller down.

The arrow keys are the trackpad player's camera.

How do I turn the camera in Roblox on a MacBook without a mouse?

Press the Left and Right arrow keys. You can also turn on shift lock (Roblox menu, Settings, Shift Lock Switch, then press Shift) so the camera follows the trackpad, or zoom all the way in with I for first person.

How do I shift lock on a MacBook?

In the Roblox menu, Settings, switch Shift Lock Switch on. Then press Shift in the experience to lock and again to unlock.

Why is shift lock not working on my Mac?

Shift Lock Switch is off, Movement Mode is set to Click to Move, the experience disabled it, or Roblox thinks you are using a controller. Check the first two in Settings. The third you cannot change.

Why does moving my finger on the trackpad not turn the camera?

Roblox's standard camera turns with the mouse only while the right button is held, in shift lock, or in first person. Use the arrow keys or shift lock instead.

Can I play Roblox on a Mac with a controller instead?

Yes. Roblox reads Xbox and PlayStation controllers on a Mac, and InputConfig covers the experiences that only take keyboard and mouse.
