How to control a Mac mini on a TV from the couch
Apple does not make a remote for the Mac any more, and the Mac mini lost its infrared receiver in the 2018 redesign, so the little Apple Remote from the old days has nothing to talk to. If your Mac mini sits under a TV, you need something else in your hand. There are four real options. I make one of them, InputConfig, so here is each one honestly, including where mine is the wrong choice.
The short answer
- You type a lot: a wireless keyboard with a built-in trackpad.
- You already hold your phone: a remote-mouse app for iPhone.
- You want a cheap mouse for the sofa: an air mouse with a USB receiver.
- You mostly watch, browse and play: a game controller with InputConfig. Free, and you probably own one.
A keyboard with a trackpad
Apple's Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad, or a couch keyboard with a touchpad built in, are the most capable choice, because nothing else types as well. The cost is a keyboard on your lap every time you want to pause a film. Most people who start here end up adding something smaller for watching.
An iPhone as the remote
Remote-mouse and remote-desktop apps on the App Store turn the phone into a trackpad and keyboard over Wi-Fi, with a helper app running on the Mac. They are good for typing a search. The catch is that you look down at the phone instead of up at the TV, and the phone has to be unlocked and awake.
An air mouse or an IR receiver
An air mouse is a remote-shaped pointer with a USB receiver: point and click, often with a small keyboard on the back. It needs no software and suits someone who just wants a mouse on the sofa. If you want your TV's own remote to drive the Mac, a USB infrared receiver that turns remote buttons into key presses (Flirc is the known one) does that; the Mac itself does not listen to a TV remote.
A game controller
A PS5, PS4, Xbox, Switch Pro or 8BitDo controller pairs with any Mac over Bluetooth in System Settings, Bluetooth; see how to connect one. On its own the Mac only uses it in games. InputConfig makes it a remote for everything else:
- The Media Controller preset sends the Mac's media keys: A plays and pauses, B and X skip, Y mutes, the bumpers and D-pad change the volume. It works in Music, the TV app, Spotify and a video in a browser tab.
- The Web Browsing preset puts the pointer on the left stick and scrolling on the right, clicks on A and B, back and forward on the bumpers, tabs on the triggers.
- Layouts for YouTube, Netflix and most web players, VLC, IINA, Infuse and Plex are in the Smart Preset Maker.
- Auto-switch changes the layout when a different app comes to the front, so you never pick one.
It is free and open source, needs no account, and nothing leaves the Mac.

Setting it up once
- Pair the controller in System Settings, Bluetooth.
- Install InputConfig from the Mac App Store and allow Accessibility when it asks, so it can send keys and clicks.
- Activate Web Browsing, then open Media Controller and add Music and the TV app to its auto-switch list.
- In Settings, General, turn on Launch at login. Hide the Dock icon if you like; the app stays in the menu bar.
- Put Start Dictation on a stick click, so you can say a search instead of typing it.

What no remote fixes
After a restart, the login window wants a password, and InputConfig, like any app, starts only after you log in. The same is true of the iPhone apps. Keep a keyboard somewhere near the TV for that. And if all you do is open streaming apps, an Apple TV with its own remote is simpler than any of this; a Mac mini earns its place under the TV when you also want a full browser, your own files and a computer.

Does the Apple Remote work with a Mac mini?
Only with older Mac minis that have an infrared receiver. The Mac mini lost it in the 2018 redesign, so the aluminium and white Apple Remotes do nothing on a current model.
Can I use the Siri Remote from an Apple TV with a Mac mini?
Apple does not support the Siri Remote as a Mac accessory. A game controller, a keyboard with a trackpad, or an iPhone remote app are the supported routes.
How do I use a Mac mini without a keyboard and mouse?
Once you are logged in, a game controller with InputConfig can do the pointer, clicks, scrolling, media keys and dictation. You still need a keyboard for the password after a restart and for first-time setup.
Can a PS5 or Xbox controller be a Mac mini remote?
Yes. Pair it over Bluetooth and activate the Media Controller and Web Browsing presets in InputConfig. Both are built in and free.
Can my TV remote control a Mac mini?
Not directly. A USB infrared receiver that maps remote buttons to key presses is the usual workaround.
