Deadzones and sensitivity

Every analog row has an inner deadzone, an outer deadzone, an invert switch, and a curve. The inner deadzone is how far the stick has to move before anything happens, which is what stops drift. The outer deadzone is where the row reaches full output, which lets a stick with limited travel, or a hand with limited range, still hit maximum.

Calibrating with the live plot

  1. Expand Options on a stick or trigger row and press Calibrate.
  2. A plot of the stick appears. Let go of it and watch where the dot rests; that is the drift.
  3. Drag the inner deadzone until the resting dot sits inside it. A little margin is good.
  4. Push the stick around its full circle and set the outer deadzone where your comfortable maximum is. Anything past it counts as full.

The built-in Deadzone Calibration preset has a wide inner and outer deadzone on the right stick and a tight one on the left, so you can feel the difference before setting your own.

Every axis at once

The header of each controller slot in the editor has a stick settings button. It sets the inner deadzone, and optionally the curve, on every axis row for that controller in one go, which is faster than opening eight rows when a whole stick needs the same treatment.

Invert

Invert flips the direction of one axis row. It is there for flight-style pitch, for a controller mounted upside down, and for anyone who finds pushing forward to look up more natural.

Tuning for tremor or limited range

A hand tremor shows up as jitter around the centre. A larger inner deadzone removes it, and the Smooth curve keeps the first part of the travel gentle so the pointer does not leap when the stick leaves the deadzone. Limited range shows up as never reaching full speed; bring the outer deadzone in until the comfortable maximum counts as full. The tremor and limited range guide walks through both with numbers.

Motion rows

Gyro and accelerometer rows have a deadzone too, in rad/s and g respectively, with a small default that filters sensor noise. Calibrate Motion at the bottom of the editor records the controller's resting zero; Quick Zero does the same in one press.

Questions

What is a good default inner deadzone?

The app defaults to 25 percent, which is safe for older or well-used sticks. A new DualSense is fine at 8 to 12 percent. Use the plot rather than guessing.

Why does my stick never reach full speed?

Its outer deadzone is at 100 percent and the stick physically stops at 90. Pull the outer deadzone in to where the stick actually stops.

Do triggers have deadzones?

Yes. A trigger is a one-direction axis, and its inner deadzone is what stops a resting trigger from firing.
