Variable sensitivity

A stick or a trigger sends a continuous value, not just on or off. Variable Sensitivity uses that depth to scale the output: a small tilt moves the pointer a little, a full push moves it fast. It is the difference between a controller that feels like a keyboard and one that feels like a mouse.

How it works

With Variable Sensitivity on, mouse motion and scroll speed are multiplied by how far the control is pushed, after the deadzone is removed. A MIDI CC output follows the position too, so a stick becomes a real modulation wheel. With it off, the output runs at the row's fixed speed whenever the control passes the deadzone.

Where it is

  1. Open a preset in the editor.
  2. Expand Options on a row whose input is an axis, a trigger, or a motion channel.
  3. Switch Variable Sensitivity on.
  4. Pick a curve if you want one: Linear feels direct, Smooth gives finer control near the centre, Aggressive ramps quickly to full speed.

Which curve

Linear for scrolling and MIDI, where the output should mirror the hand. Smooth for pointer control, because most of the time you want precision near the centre and speed only when you push hard; it is also the friendliest curve for a tremor. Aggressive for aiming in a game where snapping to full speed matters. The built-in Variable Sensitivity preset puts Smooth on the right stick and Aggressive on the left so you can feel the two side by side.

Speed and the multiplier

Each Mouse Motion row has its own speed slider, which is the maximum at full deflection. A preset also has a sensitivity multiplier in its automation section that scales every analog row at once, useful when a game feels twice as fast as the desktop.

Questions

Does it apply to keyboard outputs?

A key is either down or up, so depth cannot scale it. One-stick driving pulses the key instead, and turbo rows can be made to feel proportional the same way.

Why does the pointer creep when I let go?

The stick is resting slightly off centre. Raise the inner deadzone on that row, or run Calibrate to see where it rests.
