Vocal range test
InputConfig is completely free on the Mac App Store.
Press Start and sing. Slide down to your lowest note, then up to your highest, and you'll see your range in note names.
Sing a clear ah. Headphones off is fine, but keep music and other voices quiet.
How to get a good reading
- Warm up first. Hum or sing a few easy notes before you push the edges of your range.
- Go down slowly. Slide down a step at a time and hold each note. Stop where the note turns to a croak.
- Go up the same way. Count the notes you can hold clearly, and stop before anything hurts.
A note counts only after you hold it steadily for about a quarter of a second, so a quick squeak does not stretch your range.
Voice types and their usual ranges
| Voice type | Usual range |
|---|---|
| Bass | E2 to E4 |
| Baritone | A2 to A4 |
| Tenor | C3 to C5 |
| Alto | F3 to F5 |
| Mezzo-soprano | A3 to A5 |
| Soprano | C4 to C6 |
These are the textbook ranges choirs use as a rough guide. Real voices overlap them, and range alone does not decide a voice type.
Limits
The page reads pitch from your microphone in the browser, and nothing is recorded or sent. Very low notes, vocal fry and whistle notes are hard to read, so the extremes of a range can be missed. Want to check a note by ear? Play it on the online piano.
How this fits with InputConfig
These pages are for practice in the browser. InputConfig adds the Mac side: a MIDI keyboard or pad can press shortcuts and turn pages, and a game controller can play MIDI notes and CC into GarageBand or Logic Pro.

Play a game controller as a MIDI instrument shows it step by step. InputConfig is free on the Mac App Store.

Questions
How do I find my vocal range?
Press Start, allow the microphone, and sing a comfortable note. Slide down to the lowest note you can hold, then up to the highest. The page keeps the lowest and highest notes you held steadily.
What is my voice type?
The page lists the voice types whose usual range overlaps yours most. Range is only one part of voice type. Where your voice sounds best and feels easy matters as much, and a voice teacher can judge that.
Why did it not count a note?
A note counts once you hold it steadily for about a quarter of a second. Breathy, very quiet or wobbly notes are hard to read, so sing a clear vowel such as ah.
How many octaves is a normal range?
Many untrained singers have a range of around one and a half to two octaves. Training often extends it.
