Questions

Xbox controller keeps disconnecting from a Mac

An Xbox controller that keeps dropping off a Mac almost always has one of seven causes, and the first four cover nearly all of them. Work down the list; each check takes a minute.

1. It is still paired with an Xbox

An Xbox controller goes back to the console it knows whenever it can reach it. Turn the Xbox fully off while you test, or use the controller out of the console's range. If it keeps jumping back, hold the pairing button on the top edge until the Xbox button blinks fast and pair it with the Mac again.

2. The batteries are low

Series X|S and Xbox One controllers run on two AA batteries or a rechargeable pack, and a weak pair shows up as drops and stutter well before the controller goes dark. Put fresh batteries in before anything else. The Elite Series 2 has a built-in battery; charge it over USB-C.

3. The firmware is old

Older firmware pairs badly with anything that is not an Xbox, and the classic symptom is a controller that pairs and then drops within minutes. The update cannot run on a Mac; updating Xbox controller firmware when you have a Mac explains the ways that work.

4. Wi-Fi and USB 3 interference

Bluetooth shares the 2.4 GHz band with Wi-Fi, and USB 3 hubs, drives and docks close to the Mac add noise of their own. Move the controller closer, move hubs and drives away from the Mac, or put the Mac's Wi-Fi on 5 GHz. Drops that come and go with where you sit are nearly always this.

5. It switched itself off

An Xbox controller turns itself off after a spell with no input, which looks like a disconnect during a cutscene, a long read, or a video. Press the Xbox button and it reconnects on its own.

6. The pairing went stale

After a macOS update, or days of sleep and wake, a Bluetooth pairing can go bad. In System Settings, Bluetooth, click the info button next to the controller, choose Forget This Device, and pair it again from scratch. Turning Bluetooth off and on, or restarting the Mac, clears the rest.

7. It only drops in one game or app

If System Settings still shows the controller connected and only one game loses it, the game or the layer it runs through is the problem: Steam Input, CrossOver, or a cloud stream in a browser. Controller connected but not working covers each one. In InputConfig, a controller that comes back is noticed within a few seconds and the active preset carries on; Refresh Controllers in the controller chip picks it up by hand if not.

If it still drops, use a cable

On macOS 15 Sequoia and later, a USB-C or micro-USB cable skips Bluetooth altogether and is the steadiest connection there is. On macOS 14, Xbox pads do not work by cable, so the fixes above are the route. If the problem is lag rather than drops, see controller input lag on a Mac: Apple says Game Mode, which turns on when a game runs full screen, doubles the Bluetooth sampling rate for controllers.

Questions

Why does my Xbox controller keep disconnecting from my MacBook?

Usually because it is still paired to an Xbox, the AA batteries are low, the firmware is old, or Wi-Fi and USB 3 devices are interfering. Check those four in order before anything else.

Why does my Xbox controller blink and then turn off?

A slow blink means it is looking for the last device it was paired with. If it cannot find one, it gives up and turns off. Hold the pairing button until the Xbox button blinks fast, then connect it in System Settings, Bluetooth.

Will a cable stop an Xbox controller disconnecting from a Mac?

Yes, on macOS 15 Sequoia and later, where wired Xbox controllers are supported. On macOS 14, use Bluetooth and work through the fixes on this page.
