Steam Input outside Steam on a Mac
Steam Input is Steam's own controller mapper, and inside Steam games on a Mac it is good and free: use it there. Outside Steam it is a different story. Steam has a Desktop Layout meant to drive the desktop with a controller, but on macOS many people find it does nothing once Steam is not the front window. For a controller that works in every app, you need a mapper that runs below Steam, such as InputConfig, which I make.
What Steam Input does on a Mac
- Steam games: per-game layouts, chosen from the controller icon on the game's page. Many games have community layouts, including keyboard layouts for games with no controller support.
- Non-Steam games: added with Add a Non-Steam Game and launched from Steam. On a Mac this route is unreliable.
- Big Picture: works with a controller.
- The desktop and other apps: the Desktop Layout, in Steam's Controller settings. This is the part that often fails on a Mac.
Why the Desktop Layout does nothing
People report the same pattern on Steam's forums and Apple's: the controller works in Big Picture, then its buttons are ignored once another window is in front, while Steam still holds the pad. An Apple Community thread from February 2026 describes exactly that on macOS 26, and the usual advice there (check the Privacy and Security permissions, update macOS) did not fix it for the poster. Steam does need Input Monitoring, and sometimes Accessibility, in System Settings, Privacy and Security, so grant those first and quit Steam fully. If it still does nothing, it is not you.
InputConfig is free on the Mac App Store. macOS 14 or later, no account, no tracking, open source.
A controller in every app, below Steam
A mapper reads the controller itself and sends ordinary key presses, clicks and pointer movement, so every app receives them: Finder, a browser, a game from anywhere, a Windows game in CrossOver. InputConfig does this for free. Its desktop preset moves the pointer and clicks, web browsing and media presets cover the couch, and the Smart Preset Maker has layouts for more than 450 games and apps. Presets switch on their own when an app comes to the front, which is what the Desktop Layout was meant to do.
Stop Steam and a mapper fighting
If Steam and a mapper both act on the same pad, you get double inputs, or bindings that come and go. Pick one per game.
- In a Steam game where you want InputConfig, open the game's page, click the controller icon, and set Steam Input to Disabled for that game.
- For the desktop, quit Steam when you do not need it, or turn off Steam's support for your type of pad in Steam, Settings, Controller.
- With the original Steam Controller, Steam and InputConfig both manage its built-in keyboard and mouse mode, called lizard mode, and the two fight. Quit Steam while an InputConfig preset runs. The Steam Controller page explains how InputConfig reads it.
Which to use
| Where | Use |
|---|---|
| A Steam game with controller support | Nothing extra, or Steam Input for a custom layout |
| A Steam game with keyboard only, and a community layout exists | Steam Input |
| The desktop, a browser, any non-Steam app | A mapper such as InputConfig |
| A game outside Steam | A mapper |
| A Steam game where Steam Input misbehaves | Steam Input off for that game, then a mapper |

Questions
Does Steam Input work outside Steam on a Mac?
Only partly. Layouts work in Steam games launched from Steam. The Desktop Layout is meant for other apps, but on macOS it often does nothing once Steam is not in front. A mapper such as InputConfig works in every app.
Where is the Desktop Layout in Steam?
In Steam, Settings, Controller. Grant Steam Input Monitoring in System Settings, Privacy and Security, then quit and reopen Steam before testing it.
Can I use Steam Input and InputConfig together?
Yes, in different places. Use Steam Input in Steam games where it works, and turn it off for any game where InputConfig maps the pad, so the two do not both send input.
Is InputConfig free?
Yes. It is free and open source on the Mac App Store, for macOS 14 or later. It has no account, no analytics and no network access.
