Hotline Miami on a Mac with a controller
The Hotline Miami layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.
On a Mac: The Mac version on Steam is a 32-bit app, and macOS has not run 32-bit apps since Catalina (10.15), so it will not open on a Mac that can run InputConfig. PCGamingWiki and AppleGamingWiki report the Windows version playable in CrossOver and Parallels. This layout sends keys and the mouse, so it works in either.
You can play Hotline Miami on a Mac with a controller, but not the Mac version: it is a 32-bit app, and it stopped opening when macOS dropped 32-bit support in Catalina. The Windows version runs in CrossOver or Parallels, and a Windows game in a wrapper does not always see your controller, while keyboard and mouse input always reach it.
Hotline Miami on a pad is fine and on a mouse is faster, because the mouse points at the door and a stick points in a direction. This layout is the mouse version from a controller: the right stick moves a cursor, so you aim at the guy, not toward him.

- Move and aim. The left stick moves, the right stick is the cursor.
- Attack and throw. The right trigger attacks and fires. The left trigger throws and picks up.
- Execute and restart. Execute (Space) on the bottom face button, restart (R) on the right.
- Menu. Escape on Options.
Restart is a face button, because that is the button you press most.
Tune it to how you play
- Lock-on. Shift in the game locks aim to an enemy. Put it on the left stick click as a hold.
- Look further. Space also shifts the camera toward the cursor, and it is already bound.
- Cursor speed. Set it fast, at 24, with the Aggressive curve. This is a fast game.
- Hotline Miami 2. The same keys. Activate this preset and play.
A fast cursor with the Aggressive curve suits a game that is over in seconds.
Hotline Miami controls on keyboard and mouse
These are the keys the layout sends, which are the game's keyboard and mouse controls:
- Move. W, A, S, D.
- Attack and fire. Left click.
- Pick up and throw a weapon. Right click.
- Execute a downed enemy. Space.
- Restart the level. R.
- Menu. Escape.
The game itself only lets you rebind movement and restart, according to PCGamingWiki. To move anything else, change it on the controller instead: every row in the binding editor can be changed.
Hotline Miami controller support: controller or keyboard
Steam's store page lists full controller support for Hotline Miami, so the game was made to be played on a controller, menus included. A keyboard and mouse work as well, and the choice is yours. On a Mac, use the game's own controller support first when it sees your pad; this layout is for a pad it does not see, or for buttons it will not let you move. Full support listed means the controller is a first-class way to play Hotline Miami.

If your controller is not working in Hotline Miami
When Hotline Miami does not react to your controller on a Mac, climb this ladder, smallest step first:
- Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
- Expect less inside a wrapper. In CrossOver or the Game Porting Toolkit, Wine passes a controller to Hotline Miami only some of the time, and the keyboard and mouse get through every time. Using a controller with CrossOver games has the checks.
- Play it from keys. If Hotline Miami still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Hotline Miami already reads. The layout works whether or not Hotline Miami ever sees the controller.
Get it in two clicks
- Get InputConfig free on the Mac App Store, open it, and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
- Search for Hotline Miami and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
- Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.
To check the controller itself first, the gamepad tester shows every button and stick live in your browser.

The Sends column is Hotline Miami's default keyboard and mouse controls, as this layout expects them. If you changed a key in the game's settings, change the same row in InputConfig.

Button names follow the Xbox / PlayStation pair shown in the editor, so A / Cross is the bottom face button on either pad. On a Switch Pro Controller the bottom button is labeled B; the mapping still fires on position.

Not the Mac version: it is 32-bit, and no Mac running Catalina or later can open it. The Windows version is reported playable in CrossOver and Parallels.
