Final Fantasy XVI on a Mac with a controller
The Final Fantasy XVI layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.
On a Mac: No Mac version. It streams to a Mac from a Windows PC you own, and the stream normally passes a controller to the game's own scheme.
Yes, Final Fantasy XVI plays on a Mac with a controller, as a stream from your own Windows PC. When the stream ignores your pad, this layout plays it. Clive's Eikon abilities sit on the triggers, with the Eikon modifier held on the left bumper, Phoenix Shift on the right bumper to close distance, and dodge on a face button for the last moment.

The layout, control by control
How the layout thinks
- Move and look. The left stick moves and the right stick turns the camera. The right stick click locks on (middle click).
- Fight. The sword (left click) is the left face button, magic (right click) the top, jump the bottom, and dodge (Left Alt) the right.
- Eikons. The right trigger fires the first Eikon ability (Q) and the left trigger the second (E). The left bumper holds the Eikon modifier (Z), and D-pad up switches the active Eikon (Tab).
- Close in. Phoenix Shift (Left Shift) is the right bumper.
- Heal and menus. D-pad down drinks a potion (R). Back opens the map and Options the menu.
Phoenix Shift on a bumper closes the gap without taking a thumb off the fight.
Tune it
- Eikon swap. It is already D-pad up.
- Camera. Lower the camera rows' Speed from 18 to about 14 and 10.
A calmer camera keeps big Eikon fights readable.
If the stream passes your controller
When the stream gives the game your pad, use Square Enix's scheme. Leave the preset off in that case, or every press reaches the game twice. Test first: if Clive dodges with the preset off, the game already reads your pad.
Final Fantasy XVI controller support: controller or keyboard
Steam's store page lists full controller support for Final Fantasy XVI, so the game was made to be played on a controller, menus included. A keyboard and mouse work as well, and the choice is yours. On a Mac, use the game's own controller support first when it sees your pad; this layout is for a pad it does not see, or for buttons it will not let you move. Full support listed means the controller is a first-class way to play Final Fantasy XVI.
From Steam's listing, checked in October 2026. Every game's listing is in Mac games with controller support.
If your controller is not working in Final Fantasy XVI
When Final Fantasy XVI does not react to your controller on a Mac, climb this ladder, smallest step first:
- Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
- Press a button after the stream has started. A stream only picks up a controller that is paired with the Mac, and a browser shows a controller to a page only after a button press. Start Final Fantasy XVI, then press any button. Streaming from your own PC has its own checks, in how to stream PC games to a Mac with a controller.
- Play it from keys. If Final Fantasy XVI still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Final Fantasy XVI already reads. Turn the game's own controller option off while it runs, or a press can arrive twice. The layout works whether or not Final Fantasy XVI ever sees the controller.
Get it in two clicks
- Get InputConfig free on the Mac App Store, open it, and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
- Search for Final Fantasy XVI and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
- Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.
To check the controller itself first, the gamepad tester shows every button and stick live in your browser.
Final Fantasy XVI controls: every button and the key it sends
The Sends column is Final Fantasy XVI's default keyboard and mouse controls, as this layout expects them. If you changed a key in the game's settings, change the same row in InputConfig.

| Controller | Sends | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Left stick left | A | Left stick left moves with A |
| Left stick right | D | Left stick right moves with D |
| Left stick up | W | Left stick up moves forward with W |
| Left stick down | S | Left stick down moves back with S |
| Right stick left | Mouse motion left (speed 18) | Right stick X turns the camera left |
| Right stick right | Mouse motion right (speed 18) | Right stick X turns the camera right |
| Right stick up | Mouse motion up (speed 18) | Right stick Y turns the camera up |
| Right stick down | Mouse motion down (speed 18) | Right stick Y turns the camera down |
| X / Square | Left click | X is the sword attack, left click |
| Y / Triangle | Right click | Y casts magic, right click |
| B / Circle | Alt / Option (Left) | B dodges, mapped to Left Alt |
| A / Cross | Space | A jumps, mapped to Space |
| RB / R1 | Shift (Left) | RB is the Phoenix Shift lunge, mapped to Left Shift |
| LB / L1 | Z | LB holds the Eikon ability modifier, mapped to Z |
| Right trigger | Q | Right trigger fires the first Eikon ability, mapped to Q |
| Left trigger | E | Left trigger fires the second Eikon ability, mapped to E |
| R3 (right stick click) | Middle click | R3 locks on, mapped to the middle mouse button |
| D-pad up | Tab | D-pad up switches the active Eikon, mapped to Tab |
| D-pad down | R | D-pad down drinks a potion, mapped to R |
| Start / Options | Escape | Start opens the menu via Escape |
| Back / Share / Select | M | Back opens the map, mapped to M |
Button names follow the Xbox / PlayStation pair shown in the editor, so A / Cross is the bottom face button on either pad. On a Switch Pro Controller the bottom button is labeled B; the mapping still fires on position.
Questions
Does Final Fantasy XVI run on a Mac?
Final Fantasy XVI does not run natively on a Mac. Stream it from a Windows PC you own. This layout is for a stream that does not see the pad.
Can I play Final Fantasy XVI on a Mac with CrossOver?
Whether it runs depends on the game version and your Mac, so check CodeWeavers' compatibility reports first. If it runs and your controller does not show up, this layout is the fix: CrossOver passes keys and the mouse to Windows games reliably and controllers less so. The CrossOver controller page explains why.
Does Final Fantasy XVI have controller support?
Yes. Steam lists full controller support for Final Fantasy XVI, so every part of the game can be played on a controller.
Is Final Fantasy XVI better with a controller or a keyboard?
Both work. Steam lists full controller support for Final Fantasy XVI, so it was made to be played on a controller, and a keyboard and mouse work as well.
Why is my controller not working in Final Fantasy XVI on a Mac?
First check the Mac itself sees the controller, with the gamepad tester. If it does and Final Fantasy XVI still ignores it, activate the Final Fantasy XVI layout in InputConfig, which sends the game's keyboard and mouse controls from the controller.
Can I play Final Fantasy XVI on an M1 Mac or a MacBook Air?
Yes, through a stream. Final Fantasy XVI runs on the other end, on a cloud service or your own PC, so the Mac only plays the video and sends your input. An M1 MacBook Air streams it like any other Mac.
