Built-in preset

Easy Edit preset

Easy Edit is for a controller in one hand and a mouse or trackpad in the other, the way a keyboard and a mouse share the work. Every button does one thing. The D-pad holds the four editing shortcuts together, the way they sit together on a keyboard: up Undo, down Copy, left Cut, right Paste. It counts one direction at a time, so a quick press cannot fire Cut in place of Copy. A deletes, B saves, X types a space and Y is Return. Push the left stick down to hear the selected text read aloud, or up, firmly, to start Dictation; the right stick scrolls.

LT and LB go back and forward a web page, RT and RB switch to the previous and next tab, Back jumps to the browser's address bar, Start opens Spotlight, and a press on the left stick or the touchpad shows Mission Control. It began as a tester's own layout; Easy Browse is its companion for using the Mac from the controller alone.

Where it is in the app

It ships inside InputConfig: open the sidebar and look in its folder, or search for it. Activate it, or press Edit to see every row. It is also here as a file, identical apart from being inactive and ungrouped, for anyone who deleted theirs or wants it on another Mac.

20 rows. Button names are the Xbox / PlayStation pair the editor shows; a Switch Pro Controller fires by position. Options are the row settings that differ from the defaults.

Notes

  • Spoken names. The face buttons and the D-pad say their names through the Mac's sound output while you learn them; switch that off in each row's Options.
  • Dictation. It needs to be on in System Settings, Keyboard.
  • Reading aloud. It needs Speak selection on in System Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content.

Turn on Dictation and Speak selection first, or two of the stick moves do nothing.

To add a downloaded preset: drop the file on InputConfig's Dock icon, or click the … button next to any preset in the sidebar, choose Import Preset File, and pick the file. It lands in the sidebar, ready to activate or edit. Any launch target inside a preset file is cleared on import; add one yourself in the editor if you want it.
