Presets and folders

A preset is one complete layout: every binding for every connected device, plus its automation. Only one preset runs at a time. The sidebar holds all of them, in folders, and the app ships with dozens to start from.

The built-in library

Presets arrive sorted into folders: Desktop & Productivity, Gaming with First-Person and Genre inside it, MIDI & Creative, and Feature Showcases. They are ordinary presets in your own data folder, so edit them freely, or duplicate one first to keep the original. The Smart Preset Maker adds a layout for more than 450 games and apps on request; the presets index lists every one with its button map.

Folders

Drag one preset onto another and the app asks for a folder name; both go inside. The plus button in the sidebar also makes a folder, and folders can nest. Right-click a folder to rename it, give it a colour, or delete it; deleting a folder never deletes the presets inside, they just come out of it.

Reordering

Drag a preset up or down and drop it where you want it; drop it onto another preset to take that position, and drag it onto a folder header to move it in. The order you set is kept. It used to rearrange itself after an edit, and that was fixed in 1.4.

Duplicate, convert, share

Duplicate makes an exact copy with every option. Convert To changes the controller family a preset is built for, so an Xbox layout becomes a PlayStation layout with the same bindings. Export writes the preset to a JSON file; Import reads one back, and you can drag preset files straight onto the app icon. Files from this site's downloads work the same way.

Per-app auto-switch

Each preset can list the apps it belongs to. When one of those apps comes to the front, the preset activates on its own; when you switch to an app with a different preset, that one takes over. A game preset, a browser preset, and a music preset can hand off to each other without you touching anything. It is set in the preset's automation section, by picking apps from a list.

Automation

The same section can launch an app or a URL when the preset activates, confine the pointer to the screen so a stick never pushes it onto a second display, recenter the pointer every so often, and hide the pointer while the preset runs. The game presets from the Smart Preset Maker use all of these.

Shortcuts

Settings, General has a global shortcut that toggles your most recent preset from anywhere. Each preset can also have its own system-wide key, set in the Key field at the top of the editor. And the menu bar icon lists every preset for switching without the window.

Questions

Can two presets run at once?

No, one at a time. Per-app auto-switch and per-preset shortcuts make switching fast enough that this rarely matters, and a preset can hold bindings for several controllers at once.

Where are presets stored?

In the app's own folder under your Library, one JSON file per preset. Settings, General, Reveal Data Folder opens it. See where your data lives for the full layout and how to back it up.
