Questions
What macOS can do with a controller on its own
macOS has more built-in controller support than most people expect, and a hard edge past which it does nothing. Knowing where the edge is saves an hour of looking for a setting that does not exist.
Steps
- Open System Settings, Game Controllers to see and remap a controller inside supported games.
- Use Switch Control if a scanning interface suits you.
- For keys, pointer, scrolling and unsupported apps, use a mapper.
System Settings > Game Controllers
Lists every paired controller, shows live button presses, and lets you build per-app profiles that remap controller buttons to other controller buttons, adjust stick and trigger behaviour, and decide what the Home button does. It only affects games that already read controllers, and it can never make a button type a key or move the pointer. Step by step on where controller mappings live.
The Games app and Game Mode
macOS Tahoe collects your games in the Games app and can show a controller overlay in supported games. Game Mode, since macOS Sonoma, prioritises the game and lowers Bluetooth latency for controllers and AirPods. Neither changes what a controller does.
Switch Control and Full Keyboard Access
Accessibility features that let you run the Mac from switches, a keyboard, or by scanning. Switch Control can use a game controller button as a switch. These are scanning interfaces, which suits some people well; they are not a way to move the pointer with a stick or to type with buttons directly.
Where it stops
Nothing built in sends keyboard keys, mouse movement, clicks, scrolling, macros or MIDI from a controller, and nothing built in works in apps without controller support. That is the space a mapper fills. InputConfig is free, sends real keyboard and mouse events in every app, and ships with layouts for the desktop and for 450+ games and apps.
Questions
Can macOS remap a controller to keyboard keys?
No. System Settings > Game Controllers only remaps controller buttons to other controller buttons inside games that support controllers. Keys and mouse output need a mapper.
Can I use a controller to control my Mac without an app?
Only through Switch Control, which uses a button as a switch for a scanning interface. Direct pointer and keyboard control from a controller needs a mapper such as InputConfig.
Where are controller settings on a Mac?
System Settings, Game Controllers on macOS 14 and later; under General on macOS 13.
