Questions

Does the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C work on a Mac?

Not as a game controller. 8BitDo lists Windows and Android for both the Ultimate 2C Wireless and the Ultimate 2C Wired, the 2C is not on 8BitDo's page of controllers for Apple devices, and macOS does not put it under Game Controllers, so games built on Apple's controller support do not see it. It can still be put to work: InputConfig, the free Mac app I make, reads the pad directly and turns it into keys and mouse.

What 8BitDo says comes from its product pages, read on October 7, 2026. What InputConfig does comes from the app's own code. I have not tested a 2C myself.

The Ultimate 2 Wireless, without the C, is a different controller, and it is the one 8BitDo does list for Apple devices. Check the name on the box before following any pairing steps. The 8BitDo Ultimate 2 on a Mac covers that one.

Use the Wired model

  • You: Hold X while you plug the cable in. That starts the pad in its Windows mode. Holding B while you plug it in gives its Android mode instead.
  • InputConfig: Reads the pad in its Windows mode with a profile written for it, and names its buttons.
  • Check: Open InputConfig's Live Visualizer and press a button. It lights on the drawing of the pad.

The buttons you hold while plugging in are the mode switch on the Wired model. macOS itself does not treat that mode as a game controller, so a game with controller support of its own still will not see the pad.

Use the Wireless model

  • Over Bluetooth. Set the switch on the back to Bluetooth and pair the pad in System Settings, Bluetooth. InputConfig reads it directly, without macOS listing it as a game controller, and L4 and R4, the small extra bumpers, arrive as buttons of their own.
  • On its cable or its 2.4G adapter. The pad is in its Windows mode there. InputConfig reads every standard control, and L4 and R4 send nothing of their own.
  • What 8BitDo promises. Nothing for a Mac. It lists the adapter and the cable for Windows, and Bluetooth for Android.

Bluetooth is the connection that brings L4 and R4 across as their own buttons. 8BitDo back buttons on a Mac explains the two ways extra buttons can arrive.

Put L4 and R4 to use

L4 and R4 sit under the inner ends of LB and RB on the top edge. 8BitDo calls them Fast Bumpers and lets you assign them on the controller itself, with no software. On a Mac that gives two cases. Where they arrive as their own buttons, press Scan on a row in InputConfig and press one, and it can carry any key, click or macro. Where they send nothing of their own, assign each one on the controller to copy a button you can spare, and bind that button. Scan shows in a second which case you have.

Map it to keys and mouse

Once InputConfig reads the pad, it is mapped like any other controller: sticks to WASD and mouse look, buttons to keys, clicks, shortcuts and macros. Its triggers are analog, so a pull can follow through to scroll speed or pointer speed. The Smart Preset Maker has ready layouts for more than 450 games and apps. Mapping is how a pad that games ignore still plays them. Your first preset takes about five minutes.

Know what it cannot do on a Mac

  • Appear as a game controller. Games that rely on Apple's controller support will not see a 2C.
  • Become one through InputConfig. InputConfig sends keyboard and mouse events, not a virtual controller.
  • Carry 8BitDo's promise. 8BitDo does not list the Mac for any 2C, so none of this is promised by 8BitDo.

For a pad that Mac games see directly, pick a model 8BitDo lists for Apple devices. 8BitDo controllers on a Mac has the mode for each one.

If the Mac does not see it

Climb this ladder, smallest step first:

  1. Look in System Settings. Bluetooth for a wireless pad, and Game Controllers in the sidebar for one macOS accepts.
  2. Open the gamepad tester. The gamepad tester draws whatever a browser receives from the pad, with nothing to install.
  3. Open the Devices menu. In InputConfig, Devices, a pad the Mac can read is listed to tick, and one it cannot is grayed out with the reason.
  4. Check the cable. It has to carry data, not only power. Plug into the Mac directly, not through a hub.

If the Devices menu lists the pad, tick it, and the Live Visualizer shows every press. 8BitDo controller not working on a Mac goes further.

The short version

  • 8BitDo's list. Windows and Android. No Mac.
  • Wired. Hold X while plugging in, then map it in InputConfig.
  • Wireless. Bluetooth, read directly by InputConfig, with L4 and R4 as their own buttons.

A 2C on a Mac is a mapper's controller, not a game controller.

Questions

Is the 8BitDo Ultimate 2C compatible with Mac?

8BitDo lists the Ultimate 2C for Windows and Android, and it is not on 8BitDo's page of controllers for Apple devices. macOS does not treat it as a game controller. InputConfig, a free Mac app, can still read it and map it to keys and mouse.

Which mode does the Ultimate 2C Wired need on a Mac?

Hold X while you plug it in, which starts its Windows mode. InputConfig reads the pad in that mode. Holding B gives its Android mode.

Do L4 and R4 work on a Mac?

Over Bluetooth on the Wireless model, InputConfig reads them as buttons of their own. In the Windows mode over a cable or the 2.4G adapter they send nothing of their own, so assign them on the controller to copy another button.

Will Mac games see an Ultimate 2C?

Not games that rely on Apple's controller support, because macOS does not list the 2C as a game controller. A mapper turns its buttons into the keys and mouse those games accept.

What is the difference between the Ultimate 2 and the Ultimate 2C on a Mac?

The Ultimate 2 Wireless is on 8BitDo's list for Apple devices and pairs over Bluetooth on macOS 26 or later. The Ultimate 2C is sold for Windows and Android only.
