Questions

Does 8BitDo Ultimate Software work on a Mac?

Yes, for the newer controllers. 8BitDo's Ultimate Software V2 runs on macOS 13 or later and handles key mapping, macros, lighting and firmware updates for devices such as the Ultimate 2, the Ultimate 2C and the Pro 3. Older controllers use the original Ultimate Software, whose platforms vary by model, and the oldest only get firmware, through a separate Upgrade Tool. The first job is finding which of the four tools is for your pad.

The versions and device lists are from 8BitDo's own software pages, which I read on October 7, 2026. I make InputConfig, a free Mac app that remaps any controller the Mac can read, an 8BitDo included, with no maker's software. The two do different things, so the last sections explain when I would use which.

Steps

  1. Find your controller on 8BitDo's software page to see which tool it uses.
  2. For a newer controller, download Ultimate Software V2 for macOS. It needs macOS 13 or later.
  3. Connect the controller with a USB cable, holding the buttons 8BitDo names for your model if it asks.
  4. Change mappings or update the firmware, then save to the controller.

8BitDo says the original software is not compatible with new devices, so the two are not interchangeable. Which tool you need depends on the controller, since newer pads use V2 and older ones use the original.

Use Ultimate Software V2 on a Mac

  • You: Download Ultimate Software V2 for macOS from 8BitDo's software page and open it. Connect the controller with a USB cable that carries data.
  • Ultimate Software: Shows the controller in the app if it is on V2's list.
  • Check: Change a mapping, record a macro or run a firmware update, and save.

Some models need buttons held while you plug in. For the Ultimate 2C Bluetooth, 8BitDo says to hold L1 and R1, and for the Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller, LB and RB. If the app does not see the pad, look for the button combination 8BitDo lists for your model.

See what V2 supports on macOS

  • Controllers. The Ultimate 2 and Ultimate 2C families, the Pro 3, the 64 Bluetooth Controller and the Ultimate Mobile Gaming Controller.
  • Adapters. It supports the Retro Receivers for N64, Saturn and GameCube.
  • Other devices. It also supports the Retro keyboards, the Retro R8 mouse and the Arcade Controller.

The list grows with each release, and the Windows list has a few keyboards the macOS one does not. If your model is not on the macOS list, the Mac app will not configure it. 8BitDo controllers on a Mac covers modes and pairing for each family.

Know what the software changes, and where it is stored

Ultimate Software writes to the controller. A remap, a macro or a back button assignment made there lives in the pad and goes wherever the pad goes, to a Switch, a PC or a Mac. It changes which controller button a button acts as. It does not make a controller work in a game that has no controller support. 8BitDo's software changes the controller, and a mapper changes what the Mac does with it.

Remap on the Mac without it

  • You: Open InputConfig, add a row, press Scan, and press a button on the controller.
  • InputConfig: Records which button it is.
  • Check: Choose what it sends: a key, a click, a shortcut, a macro, or pointer movement from a stick.

That works for any 8BitDo the Mac can read, on V2's list or not, and it is what a keyboard-and-mouse game needs. One thing to check on pads with back buttons: if a back button copies another button, clear that assignment in 8BitDo's software, or on the controller itself on the Ultimate 2C, so it can have a job of its own. Use 8BitDo's software to free the back buttons, and a mapper to give them jobs. 8BitDo back buttons on a Mac walks through it.

Update the firmware

Newer controllers update inside Ultimate Software V2. Older and retro controllers use 8BitDo's Upgrade Tool, which has a macOS version. An update is worth doing when a pad will not pair or behaves oddly in one mode. A pad that will not pair with a Mac is often one firmware update away from working. 8BitDo controller not working on a Mac has the order to try things in.

The short version

  • Newer pads. They use Ultimate Software V2, which needs macOS 13 or later.
  • Older pads. They use the original Ultimate Software, or the Upgrade Tool for firmware.
  • Mapping to keys and mouse. A mapper on the Mac does this for any model.

I would get V2 if your pad is on its list, and map on the Mac either way.
