Questions

Does the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 work on a Mac?

Yes, over Bluetooth, on macOS 26 or later. That is what 8BitDo's page for Apple devices says about the Ultimate 2 Wireless: turn the mode switch to BT, press Home to turn the controller on, hold Pair for three seconds, and pick 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless in System Settings, Bluetooth. Its 2.4G adapter and its cable are listed by 8BitDo for Windows, not for a Mac.

I make InputConfig, a free Mac app that maps the controller to keys and the mouse for games with no controller support. I have not tested an Ultimate 2 myself, so this page stays with what 8BitDo publishes.

Steps

  1. Turn the mode switch to BT.
  2. Press the Home button to turn the controller on.
  3. Hold Pair for three seconds, until the status light blinks rapidly.
  4. Open System Settings, Bluetooth, and click Connect next to 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless.
  5. Open System Settings, Game Controllers, and press a button to check it is live.

Pair it over Bluetooth

  • You: Turn the switch to BT, press Home, then hold Pair for three seconds.
  • macOS: Lists 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless in System Settings, Bluetooth. Click Connect, and the status light stays solid.
  • Check: It appears under Game Controllers in the System Settings sidebar.

8BitDo says holding Pair is needed the first time only. The switch position for a Mac is BT, not the one for the 2.4G adapter.

Download InputConfig on the Mac App StoreInputConfig is free on the Mac App Store. macOS 14 or later, no account, no tracking, open source.

Check the macOS version first

8BitDo gives the system requirement for the Ultimate 2 Wireless as iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, tvOS 26 and visionOS 26. Its older pads, such as the Pro 2 and the Ultimate 2.4G, are listed for macOS 13.2. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac to see yours. An Ultimate 2 that will not appear as a game controller on an older macOS is behaving as 8BitDo describes.

Know what does not carry over to a Mac

  • The 2.4G adapter and the cable. 8BitDo's product page lists wireless 2.4G and wired for Windows, and Bluetooth for Android and Apple devices.
  • Rumble and motion. 8BitDo says rumble and motion control are not supported on Apple devices for the moment.
  • Its 1000 Hz rate. 8BitDo quotes that polling rate for the 2.4G and wired connections, which are the Windows ones.

The sticks are the same on any system: 8BitDo lists TMR joysticks on the Ultimate 2. On a Mac the Ultimate 2 is a Bluetooth controller, and its Windows extras stay on Windows.

Map it for games without controller support

For a game that already supports controllers, pairing is enough. For everything else, InputConfig turns the buttons, sticks and triggers into keys, mouse movement, clicks, scrolling and macros. Extra buttons that arrive as buttons of their own can each take a row: press Scan and press one to find out. If the controller or 8BitDo's software copies another button onto one of them, the Mac receives that button instead. 8BitDo back buttons on a Mac covers both cases. Scan shows what an extra button really sends, which is quicker than guessing.

The Ultimate 2C is a different controller

The Ultimate 2C Wired has no Apple mode at all. Plugged in while you hold X it is in its Windows mode, and InputConfig reads it there with a profile written for it, though games built on Apple's controller support will not see it. 8BitDo controllers on a Mac has the mode for each model. Check which Ultimate you have before following any pairing steps.

The short version

  • Works. Over Bluetooth, on macOS 26 or later.
  • Pair. BT, Home, Pair for three seconds, then 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless in Bluetooth settings.
  • Not on a Mac. The 2.4G adapter, the wired mode and rumble.

BT mode and a current macOS are the two things an Ultimate 2 needs from a Mac.
