Hunt: Showdown 1896 on a Mac with a controller
The Hunt: Showdown 1896 layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.
On a Mac: No Mac version: Steam lists it for Windows only. GeForce NOW carries it (the Steam version), and a Windows PC you own can stream it too; either normally passes a controller to the game's own scheme. This layout is for streams that do not see the pad.
Yes, Hunt: Showdown 1896 plays on a Mac with a controller, through GeForce NOW or a stream from a Windows PC. Either one normally passes your pad to the game, and this layout is for the times it does not. Hunt is about listening and one shot, so Dark Sight sits on a bumper: it is the button you press before every decision.

The layout, control by control
How the layout thinks
- Move and look. The left stick walks on W, A, S and D. The right stick moves the mouse at speed 16 across and 13 up and down.
- Shoot. The right trigger fires and the left trigger aims. Reload on the left face button (R).
- Move. Jump on the bottom button (Space), crouch on the right (C), sprint on the left stick click (Shift).
- Loot and interact. Loot on the top face button (F). Interact on the right stick click (E), so a door and a corpse are different buttons.
- Tools. Throw a tool on the left bumper (G), Dark Sight on the right (V).
- Loadout and menus. Weapon 1 and 2 on D-pad up and down, the tool on left (3), the consumable on right (4). Tools and consumables on Back (Tab), menu on Start (Escape).
Long guns forgive a stream, but the shotgun does not.
Tune it
- Slower aim. Duplicate the four right-stick rows, set While also holding to the left trigger on the copies, and lower their speed. At range, a slow and steady aim wins the fight.
- Voice chat. Put push to talk on a chord row, so it never opens by accident.
A slower aim while the left trigger is held is the change that matters most.
If the game sees the pad
Steam lists full controller support, and GeForce NOW passes a controller to it, so try that first with the preset off. Press Activate only if the stream ignores the pad, or if you want the keyboard game on buttons of your choosing. With both running, every press does two things.
Use the game's own pad support when it works, and keep this layout as the fallback.
Hunt: Showdown 1896 controller support: controller or keyboard
Steam's store page lists full controller support for Hunt: Showdown 1896, so the game was made to be played on a controller, menus included. A keyboard and mouse work as well, and the choice is yours. On a Mac, use the game's own controller support first when it sees your pad; this layout is for a pad it does not see, or for buttons it will not let you move. Full support listed means the controller is a first-class way to play Hunt: Showdown 1896.
From Steam's listing, checked in October 2026. Every game's listing is in Mac games with controller support.
If your controller is not working in Hunt: Showdown 1896
When Hunt: Showdown 1896 does not react to your controller on a Mac, climb this ladder, smallest step first:
- Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
- Press a button after the stream has started. A stream only picks up a controller that is paired with the Mac, and a browser shows a controller to a page only after a button press. Start Hunt: Showdown 1896, then press any button. Streaming from your own PC has its own checks, in how to stream PC games to a Mac with a controller.
- Play it from keys. If Hunt: Showdown 1896 still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Hunt: Showdown 1896 already reads. Turn the game's own controller option off while it runs, or a press can arrive twice. The layout works whether or not Hunt: Showdown 1896 ever sees the controller.
Get it in two clicks
- Get InputConfig free on the Mac App Store, open it, and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
- Search for Hunt: Showdown 1896 and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
- Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.
To check the controller itself first, the gamepad tester shows every button and stick live in your browser.

I would not count on it. Hunt is an online shooter with anti-cheat, and anti-cheat games often refuse to run under CrossOver or Wine, so check CodeWeavers' compatibility database for the current rating before you buy. GeForce NOW is the dependable way on a Mac. For Windows games that do run in CrossOver, this page covers controllers there.
