How to set up a controller in PCSX2 on a Mac
Open Settings, Controllers in PCSX2, leave the SDL input source on, open Controller Port 1, click Automatic Mapping and pick your pad. That fills in every button, and vibration too. PCSX2's documentation calls SDL the preferred source, and on a Mac it is the one that matters: the others it lists are for Windows.
The steps are from PCSX2's Controllers documentation, read on October 7, 2026. I make InputConfig, a free Mac app that maps controllers to keys and mouse. PCSX2 does not need it to read a pad, and I say below where it helps.
On this page: 10 sections
Steps
- Connect the controller to the Mac and check it under System Settings, Game Controllers.
- In PCSX2, open Settings, Controllers and keep the SDL input source on.
- Open Controller Port 1, click Automatic Mapping and choose your controller.
- With a DualSense or DualShock 4, also turn on DualShock 4 / DualSense Enhanced Mode.
Connect the pad to the Mac first
Connect the controller to the Mac before opening the emulator. A PS5, PS4, Xbox or Switch Pro controller pairs in System Settings, Bluetooth, and shows under Game Controllers. How to connect a controller to a Mac has each one. PCSX2 lists the controllers the Mac hands it, so the Mac comes first.
InputConfig is completely free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.
Map it in two clicks
- You: Open Settings, Controllers. Check that SDL is on under input sources. Open Controller Port 1 and click Automatic Mapping, then choose your pad from the list.
- PCSX2: Fills every button, both sticks and the vibration motors.
- Check: Each PS2 button now shows the pad button it is mapped to.
Map port 1 first, since games expect player one there. For most controllers, Automatic Mapping does all of the setup for you.
Turn on Enhanced Mode for a Sony pad
With an official DualSense or DualShock 4, PCSX2's documentation recommends its DualShock 4 / DualSense Enhanced Mode option. It lets PCSX2 control the pad's lights and makes the vibration motors behave properly. The same page notes that a DualShock 3's pressure-sensitive buttons work through SDL on macOS with nothing extra installed. On a DualSense, Enhanced Mode is the one switch worth turning on. The PS3 controller on a Mac covers connecting a DualShock 3.
Map by hand when Automatic Mapping has no entry
A pad Automatic Mapping does not know can still be mapped: click a button on the picture, then press the button on your pad. Hold Shift while clicking to add a second input to the same PS2 button, which is how one pad button and one key can both fire it. Every PS2 button is a box you click and then press. A plain USB pad the Mac does not list as a game controller often maps this way. Generic USB gamepads on a Mac has more on those.
Add players
Port 2 maps the same way for a second player. For three or four players, PCSX2 emulates the PS2 multitap, which turns one port into four slots, labeled A to D. Give each pad its own port before starting the game. How to use two controllers on a Mac covers the Mac side.
If buttons misfire or the pad is dead
- Quit Steam. PCSX2's documentation says Steam's controller layer can send its own keyboard keys, so a button pauses the game or opens a menu. Quit Steam fully.
- Check SDL is on. With the source off, no controller is listed.
- Map port 1. A pad mapped only to port 2 does nothing in a one-player game.
- Reconnect the pad. Then reopen the Controllers window.
A button that pauses the game by itself is Steam, not the controller. Emulator controller not working on a Mac goes further.
Where a mapper helps, and where it does not
- Not for the pad itself. PCSX2 reads controllers directly, with vibration. Map the game there.
- Shortcuts on spare buttons. PCSX2's save state, load state and fast forward are keyboard shortcuts, and it takes keys from a mapper like any Mac app. InputConfig can put them on a button PCSX2 leaves unmapped, such as a DualSense Edge paddle or the touchpad click.
- The Mac around PCSX2. The same pad moves the pointer through the game list and file dialogs.
Do not map a button in both places, or each press arrives twice. Per-app switching keeps a PCSX2 layout active only while PCSX2 is in front.
The short version
- Source. SDL, on.
- Mapping. Controller Port 1, Automatic Mapping.
- Sony pads. Enhanced Mode on.
- Misfires. Quit Steam.
SDL on, Automatic Mapping, and PCSX2 is set up.
Questions
Does a PS5 controller work with PCSX2 on a Mac?
Yes. Pair it with the Mac, keep PCSX2's SDL source on, use Automatic Mapping, and turn on DualShock 4 / DualSense Enhanced Mode, which PCSX2 recommends for official Sony pads.
Does an Xbox controller work with PCSX2 on a Mac?
Yes, an Xbox Wireless Controller paired over Bluetooth, through the SDL source and Automatic Mapping. XInput in PCSX2's list is a Windows-only source.
Why is PCSX2 not detecting my controller on a Mac?
Check that the Mac lists the pad under Game Controllers, that the SDL source is on in Settings, Controllers, and that you mapped Controller Port 1. Quit Steam, which PCSX2's documentation says can interfere.
Does a PS3 controller work with PCSX2 on a Mac?
PCSX2's documentation says a DualShock 3's pressure-sensitive buttons are supported through SDL on macOS with no extra software.
Can I play PCSX2 on a Mac with a keyboard?
Yes. Each PS2 button can be mapped to a key by clicking its box and pressing the key.
