Questions

Can you play World of Warcraft with a controller on a Mac?

Yes, three ways, and they suit different players. WoW has its own gamepad support, added in 2020 and still off until you turn it on with a console command. The ConsolePort addon builds a full controller interface on top of it. And a mapper such as InputConfig skips both and turns the controller into the keyboard and mouse the game has always read. Here is how each one works on a Mac, and which to pick.

WoW's own gamepad mode

Type /console GamePadEnable 1 in the chat box and the game starts reading the controller directly. Its buttons then show up in the normal Keybindings screen, so you bind them like keys; /console GamePadEnable 0 turns it off again. It is bare on purpose: no radial menus, no controller-first menus, and the camera and targeting take tuning. Whether it sees your particular pad on your Mac is worth testing before you plan an evening around it. If the Mac does not list the pad under Game Controllers in the System Settings sidebar, the game will not see it either (how to test a controller on a Mac).

ConsolePort

ConsolePort is the addon most WoW controller players use. It sits on the gamepad mode and adds what that mode lacks: radial menus for the action bars, a controller-driven way through bags and menus, and targeting built for a stick. It is the deepest option for a full raid rotation, and the one with the most setup. It depends on the game reading your pad, so the first step is the same as above.

A mapper, with no addon

The third way needs nothing in the game. InputConfig reads the controller and sends keys and clicks, so WoW sees a keyboard and mouse and behaves exactly as it would with them. The World of Warcraft layout is built in: movement on the left stick, action bar slots 1 to 6 on the face buttons and bumpers, 0 on D-pad up, target and interact on the triggers, jump on the left stick click, and the mouse on the right stick for the camera. A chord gives the face buttons a second bar (chords).

It works with any controller macOS sees, including pads the game ignores: a DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox, Switch Pro or 8BitDo pad, or an adaptive controller. It works the same in retail and Classic. And because it is one app for every game, the same pad switches to a different layout when you move to another app (per-app auto-switch).

The camera with a mapper

WoW turns the view only while a mouse button is held, and a stick sends plain mouse movement. So hold the right trigger (left button) while you push the right stick to look around, or the left trigger (right button) to steer. For a camera that turns without holding anything, put right click on a spare button and set it to Toggle: one press latches it, the next lets go (toggle).

Which one to pick

  • Questing, gathering, fishing, dungeons on a class you know: the mapper layout. Nothing to install in the game and no addon to keep updated.
  • A full raid rotation from a pad: ConsolePort, if the game reads your controller on your Mac.
  • A controller the game does not see, or an adaptive setup: the mapper, since the game never has to see the pad.

Pick one at a time. With the game reading the pad and a mapper sending keys, every press does two things.

Questions

Does WoW have controller support?

Yes, partly: a gamepad mode that is off by default and turned on with /console GamePadEnable 1. Most players add the ConsolePort addon for a full controller interface. A mapper is the third route and needs neither.

Does WoW have controller support on a Mac?

The gamepad mode is part of the game client; test it with your own pad on your Mac before building a setup on it. A mapper works on any Mac with macOS 14 or later and any controller the Mac sees.

Can I use a PS5 controller for WoW on a Mac?

Yes. Through a mapper it always works, because WoW only receives keys and clicks. Through the game's gamepad mode it works if WoW reads the pad on your Mac; try it.

Is a controller mapper allowed in WoW?

A mapper sends one key for one press, the same as a keyboard. Blizzard's rules on automation are Blizzard's to state; InputConfig's macros are optional, and whether you use them is up to you.
