Left 4 Dead 2 on a Mac with a controller

Download InputConfig on the Mac App StoreThe Left 4 Dead 2 layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.

On a Mac: Steam lists Left 4 Dead 2 for Windows and Linux only today, so a current Mac plays it through GeForce NOW, which carries the Steam release (checked September 2026), or a stream from a PC you own. Steam lists full controller support, which a stream normally passes through. This layout is for streams that do not see the pad.

You can play Left 4 Dead 2 on a Mac with a controller through GeForce NOW or a stream from a PC you own, because Steam now lists it for Windows and Linux only. Steam lists full controller support, which a stream normally passes through, so use the game's own scheme when it does.

This layout is the keyboard game from a pad for when it does not, built around the one button that matters in a horde: the shove, on the left trigger, where a finger can spam it while your thumb aims.

The layout, control by control

Click a control. Labels:

How the layout thinks

  • Move and look. The sticks.
  • Fire and shove. The right trigger fires. The left trigger shoves.
  • Face buttons. Jump, crouch, reload, and E to use.
  • Quiet move. Shift on the left stick click.
  • Inventory. The D-pad is the primary weapon (1) on up, the pistol or melee (2) on left, the health kit (4) on right, and the throwable (3) on down. Escape on Options.

The shove is on a trigger, because in a horde it is the button you press most.

Tune it to your team

  • Pills and adrenaline. Slot 5 is the one slot not on the D-pad. Put the 5 key on the touchpad press, so when a friend shouts for pills, you know the button.
  • Flashlight. Put F on the right stick click.
  • Voice lines. Z and X open the vocalize menus. Put them on a chord on the face buttons.
  • Melee on repeat. A melee weapon swings on the fire button, and Repeats while held on the fire row makes a held trigger swing at the game's pace.
  • Look. Hordes come from behind, and the Aggressive curve helps the 180.

If the stream sees your pad, use the game's own support and turn this preset off, so a press does not arrive twice. Add pills on the touchpad first, because it is the slot people miss.

Left 4 Dead 2 controller support: controller or keyboard

Steam's store page lists full controller support for Left 4 Dead 2, so the game was made to be played on a controller, menus included. A keyboard and mouse work as well, and the choice is yours. On a Mac, use the game's own controller support first when it sees your pad; this layout is for a pad it does not see, or for buttons it will not let you move. Full support listed means the controller is a first-class way to play Left 4 Dead 2.

From Steam's listing, checked in October 2026. Every game's listing is in Mac games with controller support.

If your controller is not working in Left 4 Dead 2

When Left 4 Dead 2 does not react to your controller on a Mac, climb this ladder, smallest step first:

  1. Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
  2. Press a button after the stream has started. A stream only picks up a controller that is paired with the Mac, and a browser shows a controller to a page only after a button press. Start Left 4 Dead 2, then press any button. Streaming from your own PC has its own checks, in how to stream PC games to a Mac with a controller.
  3. Play it from keys. If Left 4 Dead 2 still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Left 4 Dead 2 already reads. Turn the game's own controller option off while it runs, or a press can arrive twice. The layout works whether or not Left 4 Dead 2 ever sees the controller.

Get it in two clicks

  1. Get InputConfig free on the Mac App Store, open it, and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
  2. Search for Left 4 Dead 2 and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
  3. Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.

To check the controller itself first, the gamepad tester shows every button and stick live in your browser.

Left 4 Dead 2 controls: every button and the key it sends

The Sends column is Left 4 Dead 2's default keyboard and mouse controls, as this layout expects them. If you changed a key in the game's settings, change the same row in InputConfig.

Questions

Does Left 4 Dead 2 support controllers?

Yes, Steam lists full controller support, which a stream usually passes through. This keyboard layout on a pad is for a stream that does not see the controller, with the shove on a trigger.

Does Left 4 Dead 2 have controller support?

Yes. Steam lists full controller support for Left 4 Dead 2, so every part of the game can be played on a controller.

Is Left 4 Dead 2 better with a controller or a keyboard?

Both work. Steam lists full controller support for Left 4 Dead 2, so it was made to be played on a controller, and a keyboard and mouse work as well.

Why is my controller not working in Left 4 Dead 2 on a Mac?

First check the Mac itself sees the controller, with the gamepad tester. If it does and Left 4 Dead 2 still ignores it, activate the Left 4 Dead 2 layout in InputConfig, which sends the game's keyboard and mouse controls from the controller.

Can I play Left 4 Dead 2 on an M1 Mac or a MacBook Air?

Yes, through a stream. Left 4 Dead 2 runs on the other end, on a cloud service or your own PC, so the Mac only plays the video and sends your input. An M1 MacBook Air streams it like any other Mac.

Does Left 4 Dead 2 run in CrossOver on a Mac?

I have not tested Left 4 Dead 2 in CrossOver. CodeWeavers keeps a compatibility list where players report how each Windows game runs. If it runs and the controller is not seen, this layout plays it from the keys and mouse.
