Stick Zones & Gestures is the showcase for the parts of a stick or trigger that can be buttons of their own. The left stick walks with W, A, S and D, and pushed all the way up it also holds Shift to sprint: that Sprint ring shares the stick with the walking rows. The right stick is a four-way menu of rings, one arrow key each. The left trigger has two bands, a half pull for 1 and a full pull for 2. Pull the left stick straight back twice for Escape, or flick it right twice for Tab.

Works with any controller: walk on the left stick, a four-way menu on the right, two pulls on the left trigger, and two gestures

Where it is in the app

It ships inside InputConfig: open the sidebar and look in its folder, or search for it. Activate it, or press Edit to see every row. It is also here as a file, identical apart from being inactive and ungrouped, for anyone who deleted theirs or wants it on another Mac.

Notes

  • The Sprint ring. It covers the outer tenth of the left stick's travel (Inner 90%, Outer 100%) from 60 to 120 degrees, so within 30 degrees of straight up. It shares the stick, so W keeps walking while Shift is held.
  • The right stick menu. Four rings from half way out to the edge, a quarter turn each, centered on up, right, down and left. The right stick has no direction rows, so each ring fires on its own and the middle stays neutral.
  • The trigger bands. Half pull runs from 30% to 70% of the left trigger's travel and Full pull from 70% to 100%, each one a button.
  • The gestures. Stick Gesture rows: two pulls straight back send Escape, two flicks right send Tab. Each flick also takes a step, since the walking rows still read the stick.
  • Make it yours. The regions belong to this preset. Choose Edit regions in a stick row's direction menu, or open the editor's Regions card, to resize them or draw your own; a region can take over its stick, so only it fires there, or share it with the direction rows.

A ring reads how far the stick is pushed as well as which way, so the same push can walk and sprint.

To add a downloaded preset: drop the file on InputConfig's Dock icon, or click the … button next to any preset in the sidebar, choose Import Preset File, and pick the file. It lands in the sidebar, ready to activate or edit. Any launch target inside a preset file is cleared on import; add one yourself in the editor if you want it.
