Scan to bind
Nobody should have to know that A / Cross is button 0 or that the mod wheel is CC 1. Scan exists so you never do: press Scan on a row, press the thing, and the row is bound to it. It works for every input the app supports, on every device at once.
What Scan captures
- Any button, trigger, stick direction, or D-pad direction on a connected controller, including the DualSense Edge paddles and FN buttons.
- Any key on your Mac keyboard or a second keyboard, including modifier keys pressed on their own: Shift, Control, Option, Command, right Command, F16 to F19, and the fn / Globe key.
- Extra mouse buttons and the scroll wheel.
- A MIDI note, pad, control change, pitch bend movement, aftertouch, or program change from any connected MIDI device.
- A touchpad swipe or press on a DualSense or DualShock 4.
- Gyroscope and accelerometer movement on a motion-capable controller.
How to use it
- Open a preset in the editor and press Scan on the row you want to change, or add a new row first.
- A panel counts down and says Press a control to map it.
- Press the control. Hold a button, move an axis to its end, play a key, or twist a knob.
- The row's input updates to what you pressed and the panel closes.
Cancelling
Press Escape, or click Cancel on the panel. The Cancel button is there for people who are not using a keyboard at all.
What it cannot see
A controller that is not connected, obviously, and a button the controller does not send. The Access Controller has profiles that can leave buttons unmapped on the controller itself; if a press produces nothing in the scanner, that page explains the fix. Some controllers in the wrong mode send nothing recognisable either, which the 8BitDo and Stadia pages cover.
The fn key and the Globe key
macOS treats these as two different things and so does InputConfig. Holding fn as a modifier for another key, the way Globe E opens the emoji picker, is fn / Globe (hold) under Modifier Keys. Tapping the Globe key on its own, which fires whatever the keyboard setting says it should, is Globe Key (Emoji) under Special Keys. Scan tells them apart.
Questions
Can I scan a stick direction?
Yes. Push the stick to the edge in the direction you want and it is captured as that half-axis.
Why does the scanner show my Mac keyboard when I want the controller?
It listens to everything at once. Press the controller instead and that is what it takes; a stray keystroke during a scan is the only way to bind the wrong thing.
