Spoken feedback

Each row can speak a phrase when it fires, through the Mac or through the controller's speaker if audio is routed there. Leave the phrase empty and the app says the input's name, which is a quick way to learn a new layout by ear, and a real help to anyone who cannot see the controller.

Setting it up

  1. Edit a preset and expand Options on the row.
  2. Switch on Speak.
  3. Type the phrase, or leave it blank to speak the input's name.
  4. Choose the destination. Mac plays through the current audio output; Controller plays through the controller's speaker when the Mac is set to use it.

The built-in Spoken Feedback preset gives each face button a phrase, with two going to the Mac and two to the controller.

Routing audio to the controller speaker

Open System Settings, Sound, and under Output pick the controller. The DualSense shows up as an audio device over USB and Bluetooth. Speech then plays from the controller, quietly, close to your hands, without interrupting what the Mac is playing.

Where it helps

  • Learning a game layout: every button announces itself until you stop needing it.
  • Confirming a switch on an adaptive controller that the user cannot see.
  • Announcing preset changes: a row with an App Action to switch preset can say the preset's name as it does.
  • A spoken checklist for a macro that does several things.

Questions

Which voice is used?

The system voice set in System Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content.

Can speech and a key press be on the same row?

Yes. Speech is an option on the row, so the output still fires and the phrase plays alongside it.
