MIDI keyboard not working on a Mac
A MIDI keyboard that does nothing on a Mac is failing in one of three places: the Mac does not see it, the Mac sees it and the music app is not listening, or the notes arrive and nothing is set to make sound. The quickest way to tell them apart is to check whether the Mac hears a note at all, which takes a minute and needs no extra software.
The macOS steps below are from Apple's Audio MIDI Setup guide. I make InputConfig, a free Mac app that turns MIDI keys into shortcuts, and its MIDI view is one more way to see what a keyboard sends.
On this page: 10 sections
Steps
- Open the MIDI tester in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, press Start listening and play a key.
- If nothing shows, open Audio MIDI Setup, choose Window, Show MIDI Studio, and click Rescan MIDI.
- If the keyboard is dimmed there, double-click it and make sure Device is online is selected.
- If the Mac hears the keyboard, turn its input on in your music app and arm a track.
- For a Bluetooth keyboard, connect it from MIDI Studio's Configure Bluetooth button.
See whether the Mac hears a note
- You: Open the MIDI tester in Chrome, Edge or Firefox, press Start listening, allow MIDI, and play a key. Safari has no MIDI for web pages.
- macOS: Passes every message from the keyboard to the page.
- Check: A note lights on the drawing and its number appears in the list.
If a note shows there, the keyboard and the cable are fine and the fault is in the music app. If nothing shows, the Mac is not seeing the keyboard, and the next two sections are for you.
InputConfig is free on the Mac App Store. macOS 14 or later, no account, no tracking, open source.
If the keyboard is not in MIDI Studio
Open Audio MIDI Setup with Spotlight and choose Window, Show MIDI Studio. Apple's guide says a MIDI device on a USB port is usually detected by itself and shown there.
- Rescan. Click the Rescan MIDI button in the MIDI Studio toolbar.
- Check the basics. Apple's list: make sure it is properly connected, that it is turned on, and that any software the manufacturer requires is installed.
- Change the path. Try another cable and a port on the Mac itself in place of a hub.
A keyboard missing from MIDI Studio is a cable, power or driver problem, and no app setting will fix it. Apple's page is If a connected MIDI device isn't shown.
If the keyboard is dimmed
A dimmed device in MIDI Studio may be turned off or disconnected. Double-click it, and in its Properties window make sure Device is online is selected. If it was not, select it and click Apply. If it already was, reconnect the keyboard to the Mac.
Dimmed means the Mac remembers the keyboard and cannot reach it right now.
If the Mac hears it and the music app does not
- GarageBand and Logic Pro. They listen to every MIDI source. Select a software instrument track and play.
- Ableton Live. In Settings, Link, Tempo and MIDI, switch Track on for the keyboard's input.
- Other music apps. Turn the keyboard's input on in the app's MIDI settings.
- The track. Arm it, or turn on monitoring, and match its MIDI channel to the keyboard's if it listens to one channel only.
Most silent setups are a track that is not armed, or an input that is not switched on. A controller keyboard makes no sound of its own, so the sound always comes from an instrument in the app.
If it is a Bluetooth MIDI keyboard
Bluetooth MIDI is connected from Audio MIDI Setup. In MIDI Studio, click the Configure Bluetooth button in the toolbar, put the keyboard in pairing mode, select it in the list and click Connect. Apple's guide also says to install any software the keyboard's maker provides first.
A Bluetooth MIDI keyboard that never appears in your music app was usually never connected in MIDI Studio. Bluetooth MIDI on a Mac has the full steps.
Run Apple's own test
- You: In MIDI Studio, click the Test MIDI Setup button in the toolbar, then play a note on the keyboard.
- macOS: Highlights the up arrow on the keyboard's icon, its In port, when the note arrives.
- Check: Click Test MIDI Setup again to leave test mode.
The arrow lighting up is the Mac's own confirmation that the keyboard is being heard. Apple's page is Test your MIDI connection.
Put a working keyboard to more use
Once the Mac hears it, a MIDI keyboard can do more than play notes. InputConfig turns each key, pad, knob and pedal into a keyboard shortcut, a click, a phrase or an app launch, in every app, and its Live Visualizer shows every note and knob as it arrives. The same view is a quick check: if a key lights there, the Mac hears it. MIDI to keystroke on a Mac has the setup.
The short version
- Nothing reaches the Mac. MIDI Studio, Rescan MIDI, then cable, power and the maker's software.
- Dimmed. Device is online, then reconnect.
- The Mac hears it. Switch the input on in the music app and arm a track.
- Bluetooth. Connect it from MIDI Studio's Configure Bluetooth button.
Find out first whether the Mac hears a note, and half the possible causes are gone.
Questions
Why is my MIDI keyboard not working on my Mac?
Either the Mac does not see it, or the music app is not listening to it. Check MIDI Studio in Audio MIDI Setup first: if the keyboard is missing or dimmed, fix the connection. If it is there, turn its input on in the music app and arm a track.
How do I get my Mac to recognize a MIDI keyboard?
Open Audio MIDI Setup, choose Window, Show MIDI Studio, and click Rescan MIDI. If it still does not appear, check the cable, that it is turned on, and that any software the maker requires is installed.
Why is my MIDI keyboard dimmed in Audio MIDI Setup?
It may be turned off or disconnected. Double-click it, make sure Device is online is selected, and reconnect the keyboard.
Does a MIDI keyboard need a driver on a Mac?
Many USB keyboards appear by themselves with nothing installed. Apple's guide says to install any software the manufacturer requires, so check the maker's site if yours does not show up.
Why does my MIDI keyboard make no sound on a Mac?
A controller keyboard sends notes and makes no sound of its own. Select a software instrument track in a music app such as GarageBand, make sure the keyboard's input is on, and play.
How do I test a MIDI keyboard on a Mac?
In Audio MIDI Setup's MIDI Studio, click Test MIDI Setup and play a note: the up arrow on the device lights. Or open a browser MIDI tester in Chrome, Edge or Firefox and watch the notes arrive.
