Skul: The Hero Slayer on a Mac with a controller
The Skul: The Hero Slayer layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.
On a Mac: Native on macOS through Steam, which lists full controller support. Use the game's own controls when it sees your pad. This layout is for a pad it does not see. The skull swap is Skul's own key; change the interact row's output to it.
Yes, Skul: The Hero Slayer runs natively on the Mac, and Steam lists full controller support, so try the game's own scheme first. This layout is for a pad the game does not see, and it is a platformer layout: jump on the big button, dash next to it, attack on the trigger. The head swap is the button that matters, and it needs one change.

The layout, control by control
How the layout thinks
- Move. The left stick and D-pad left and right move (A and D). D-pad up enters a door (W), down drops (S).
- Jump and roll. Jump on the bottom face button (Space), roll on the right (Shift).
- Weapons. Primary attack on the right trigger (left click), secondary on the left (right click).
- Skills and use. Skill 1 on the left face button (Q), skill 2 on the top (E). Interact on the left bumper (R).
- Menu. Menu on Start (Escape).
Every row is right for Skul except interact, which should be the skull swap.
Tune it
- The skull swap. Set the left bumper's output, the interact row, to Skul's skull swap key.
- Quintessence. Both stick clicks are empty. Put its key on one.
Give the left bumper the swap, and the layout is Skul's.
If the game sees the pad
Steam lists full controller support, and the game's own scheme is the better way to play. Use it whenever it sees your pad, with this preset off. With both running, every press does two things.
Skul's own scheme handles the pad well, so leave the preset off whenever the game sees it.
Skul: The Hero Slayer controller support: controller or keyboard
Steam's store page lists full controller support for Skul: The Hero Slayer, so the game was made to be played on a controller, menus included. A keyboard and mouse work as well, and the choice is yours. On a Mac, use the game's own controller support first when it sees your pad; this layout is for a pad it does not see, or for buttons it will not let you move. Full support listed means the controller is a first-class way to play Skul: The Hero Slayer.
From Steam's listing, checked in October 2026. Every game's listing is in Mac games with controller support.
If your controller is not working in Skul: The Hero Slayer
When Skul: The Hero Slayer does not react to your controller on a Mac, climb this ladder, smallest step first:
- Check that the Mac sees the controller. Open the gamepad tester and press a button. If nothing lights up there, the problem is the connection, and a controller that is connected but not working covers that first.
- Check the Steam Input setting for Skul: The Hero Slayer. In Steam, open Skul: The Hero Slayer, Properties, Controller, and change the Steam Input override. A controller that works in Steam but not in the game goes through each choice.
- Play it from keys. If Skul: The Hero Slayer still ignores the pad, activate this layout. It sends the keyboard and mouse controls Skul: The Hero Slayer already reads. Turn the game's own controller option off while it runs, or a press can arrive twice. The layout works whether or not Skul: The Hero Slayer ever sees the controller.
Get it in two clicks
- Get InputConfig free on the Mac App Store, open it, and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
- Search for Skul: The Hero Slayer and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
- Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.
To check the controller itself first, the gamepad tester shows every button and stick live in your browser.
Skul: The Hero Slayer controls: every button and the key it sends
The Sends column is Skul: The Hero Slayer's default keyboard and mouse controls, as this layout expects them. If you changed a key in the game's settings, change the same row in InputConfig.

| Controller | Sends | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Left stick left | A | Move left (A) |
| Left stick right | D | Move right (D) |
| D-pad left | A | Move left |
| D-pad right | D | Move right |
| A / Cross | Space | Jump (Space) |
| B / Circle | Shift (Left) | Roll (Shift) |
| Right trigger | Left click | Primary weapon |
| Left trigger | Right click | Secondary weapon |
| X / Square | Q | Skill 1 (Q) |
| Y / Triangle | E | Skill 2 (E) |
| LB / L1 | R | Use / interact (R) |
| D-pad up | W | Up / enter door (W) |
| D-pad down | S | Down / drop (S) |
| Start / Options | Escape | Menu (Esc) |
Button names follow the Xbox / PlayStation pair shown in the editor, so A / Cross is the bottom face button on either pad. On a Switch Pro Controller the bottom button is labeled B; the mapping still fires on position.

Why is my controller not working in Skul: The Hero Slayer on a Mac?
First check the Mac itself sees the controller, with the gamepad tester. Skul: The Hero Slayer has a native Mac version, and its minimum requirements are listed on its Steam store page, so check your Mac against that list. I have not tested it on each Mac. The controller layout itself works the same on any Mac that runs InputConfig.
