Microsoft Teams from a game controller

Download InputConfig on the Mac App StoreThe Microsoft Teams layout is built into InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.

On a Mac: Teams for Mac takes the shortcuts Microsoft lists for it, such as Command Shift M for mute, while a Teams window is in front.

Yes, you can put Microsoft Teams mute, camera, raise hand and leave on a game controller on a Mac. Mute is on the big bottom button, where you can find it without looking, and leave is on the top, as far from mute as a thumb can get. Leaving a meeting by accident is worse than saying something on an open mic. Slightly.

The layout, control by control

Click a control. Labels:

How the layout thinks

  • Mute. Command Shift M on the bottom face button.
  • Camera and hand. Camera (Command Shift O) on the right, raise hand (Command Shift K) on the left.
  • Leave. Command Shift H on the top.
  • Point, scroll, close. The left stick is a pointer for the meeting controls, the right stick scrolls chat, the right trigger clicks, and Escape is on Options.

These are the shortcuts Microsoft lists for Teams on a Mac. Mute is under your thumb and hang up is out of its way.

If the mute button does nothing

Teams listens for its shortcuts only while its meeting window is in front. Climb this ladder, smallest step first:

  1. Click the meeting window. If you were taking notes in another app, bring Teams back to the front and press again.
  2. Keep it in front. Put the meeting on a second display so it stays the front window while you look elsewhere.
  3. Use the call app that can go global. Zoom and Discord can make mute work from any app. Teams does not offer that, as far as I can find.

None of this is the controller's fault. Teams mute works only with the meeting window in front.

Tune it for meetings

  • Vibrate on mute. Turn on a short pulse under Feedback in the row's Options. It is the reason to do this at all.
  • The DualSense mute button. InputConfig can bind the microphone button under the PS button. Put Command Shift M on it.
  • Share screen. Put Command Shift E on a bumper.
  • Only during meetings. List Teams under Activate when these apps are in front and turn on automatic switching in Settings, Advanced, and the buttons go back to your usual layout when you leave Teams.

Figure 1. List Teams here and the mute layout runs only while Teams is in front.

The physical mute button page covers Zoom, Meet, Slack and Discord the same way. A pulse on mute is what makes a shortcut feel like a real switch.

Get it in two clicks

  1. Get InputConfig free on the Mac App Store, open it, and click Smart Preset Maker on the welcome screen.
  2. Search for Microsoft Teams and pick it. The layout is created as a preset in your sidebar, named and ready.
  3. Press Activate. Every row can be changed afterwards: the editor's Scan button rebinds any control the moment you touch it.

Button names follow the Xbox / PlayStation pair shown in the editor, so A / Cross is the bottom face button on either pad. On a Switch Pro Controller the bottom button is labeled B; the mapping still fires on position.

Questions

What is the Teams mute shortcut on a Mac?

Command Shift M toggles mute, Command Shift O the camera, Command Shift K raises or lowers your hand, and Command Shift H leaves, per Microsoft's list for Teams on a Mac.

Does the mute button work when Teams is in the background?

Not as far as I can find. Teams needs its meeting window in front for its shortcuts. Zoom and Discord can make mute global. Teams does not offer that.
