Questions

How to connect a Guitar Hero controller to a Mac

It depends on which console the guitar was made for. A PS3 guitar with its own USB dongle is the simplest on a Mac. Wii and PS2 guitars need a wired USB adapter. Xbox 360 guitars are the hard ones: the Clone Hero wiki says they have not worked on macOS since macOS 12, so they need an adapter that converts their signal as well as the Xbox 360 receiver.

The guitar facts are from the Clone Hero wiki's guitar and receiver pages, read on October 7, 2026. I make InputConfig, a free Mac app that maps controllers to keys, mouse and MIDI. I have not tested a guitar controller, and I say where that matters.

Steps

  1. Find out which console the guitar was made for, and whether it is wired or wireless.
  2. Get the receiver or adapter that guitar needs. Wireless receivers are not interchangeable.
  3. Plug it into the Mac and open a gamepad tester in a browser. Press a fret.
  4. Open Clone Hero and assign the frets, strum bar and whammy in its controls screen.

Find your guitar in the table

Guitar made forWhat it needsOn a Mac
PlayStation 3The USB dongle that came with that guitarThe simplest route
PlayStation 2A PS2 to USB adapterArrives as a USB gamepad

Xbox 360An Xbox 360 receiver and a converting adapterThe hard one

Xbox One, Guitar Hero LiveTheir own receiversUnknown, per the wiki

The console printed on the guitar decides everything else.

Connect a PlayStation guitar

A wireless PS3 guitar talks only to its own dongle, and the wiki is firm that dongles are not interchangeable: a World Tour dongle will not pair a Les Paul. Buy a used guitar with its dongle, or not at all. The dongle plugs into USB and the Mac sees a gamepad. The wiki notes the PS3 Les Paul has noticeable input delay on a computer. A PS2 guitar has the old PlayStation plug and needs a PS2 to USB adapter. With PlayStation guitars, the dongle matters more than the guitar. The PS2 controller on a Mac covers those adapters.

Connect a Wii guitar

A Wii guitar has no radio of its own. It plugs into a Wii Remote, and on a Mac the wiki's route is a wired USB adapter that takes that plug and works on a Mac. The controller list InputConfig bundles has Mac entries for Raphnet's and Mayflash's adapters for Wii Classic Controllers, which use the same plug. Whether a given adapter passes a guitar through is up to the adapter, so read its page before buying. For a Wii guitar on a Mac, the adapter is the purchase that matters. The Wii Remote on a Mac covers the remote itself.

Know why Xbox 360 guitars are harder

Xbox 360 guitars, wired or wireless, speak the Xbox 360 controller protocol, which macOS does not read. The wiki says a wireless one needs the Xbox 360 wireless receiver and, on a Mac, an adapter that converts the signal into something a Mac understands, and it names the Mayflash Magic NS2. A wired Xplorer needs the same kind of adapter. An Xbox 360 guitar needs two things on a Mac: its receiver, and a converter. The Xbox 360 controller on a Mac explains the protocol problem.

Check that the Mac sees it

  • You: Plug in the dongle or adapter and open the gamepad tester in a browser. Press a fret and move the strum bar.
  • macOS: Hands the browser a gamepad if the guitar arrived as one.
  • Check: Frets show as buttons. The strum bar usually shows as a D-pad or an axis, and the whammy as an axis.

If the tester sees the frets, Clone Hero can too. InputConfig's Devices menu is a second check: a device the Mac can read is listed to tick.

Set it up in the game

Clone Hero reads a guitar the Mac sees and has its own screen for assigning frets, strum, whammy and tilt. No mapper is needed for that, and a mapper in between would only add a step. The wiki lists a few guitars that lose whammy or tilt on a Mac, the PDP Riffmaster for PlayStation among them. For Clone Hero, connect the guitar and let the game do the mapping.

Use the guitar for something else

A guitar that arrives as a USB gamepad is five buttons, a strum bar and a lever, and InputConfig can give each one a job in any app:

  • Keys. Frets as keys, for a rhythm game that only takes the keyboard.
  • MIDI notes. Each fret sends a note into GarageBand or Logic Pro, and the whammy can send pitch bend.
  • Shortcuts. Strum down for the next slide, strum up for the last one.

Once the Mac sees the guitar, every fret is a button you can assign. A game controller as a MIDI instrument has the MIDI steps.

The short version

  • Easiest. A PS3 guitar with its own dongle.
  • Needs an adapter. PS2 and Wii guitars.
  • Hardest. Xbox 360 guitars, which need a receiver and a converter.

Buy the guitar and its dongle together, and test it in a browser before anything else.

Questions

Can you use a Guitar Hero controller on a Mac?

Yes, for many of them. PS3 guitars work through their own USB dongle, PS2 and Wii guitars through USB adapters, and Xbox 360 guitars need a receiver plus an adapter that converts their signal.

Does an Xbox 360 Guitar Hero controller work on a Mac?

Not directly. The Clone Hero wiki says they have not worked on macOS since macOS 12, and that a Mac needs an adapter that converts the signal, such as the Mayflash Magic NS2.

Which Guitar Hero guitar is best for a Mac?

I have not tested them, so I cannot rank them. By the wiki's notes, a PS3 guitar with its matching dongle needs the least extra hardware on a Mac.

Does a Guitar Hero Live guitar work on a Mac?

The Clone Hero wiki says Mac support for Guitar Hero Live guitars is unknown and probably missing.

Can I use a Guitar Hero controller as a MIDI controller?

Yes, when the Mac sees it as a gamepad. InputConfig can send a MIDI note from each fret and pitch bend from the whammy bar.
