Auto typer for Mac
InputConfig is completely free on the Mac App Store. You don't have to make an account, there are no subscriptions, and nothing is locked. Optimized for Apple silicon.
Yes, a Mac can type text for you. For a phrase you use often, macOS Text Replacements expand a short code into it with no app. To type a whole sentence from one key, or the same text over and over on a timer, InputConfig, free on the Mac App Store, has a Type Text output that types it as real keystrokes.
Steps
- Install InputConfig and allow it in System Settings, Privacy & Security, Accessibility.
- Make a row and press the key or button that should start it.
- Choose Type Text as the output and enter the text.
- To repeat it, choose Repeats until pressed again and set the gap.
- Press the control once to start, and again to stop.
Expand a short code with Text Replacements
macOS does this on its own. In System Settings, Keyboard, Text Replacements, add a short code and the phrase it stands for. Type the code in most apps and the phrase replaces it. For a signature, an address or a stock reply, Text Replacements is enough.
Type a sentence from one key
- You: Make a row, Scan the key, mouse button or controller button that should start it, and choose Type Text as the output.
- InputConfig: Types the whole text, as keystrokes, each time you press that control.
- Check: Press it in a blank note first and read what arrives.
A key you never use makes the safest trigger: F13 to F19 on a full keyboard, or a mouse side button.
Type it again and again
Choose Repeats until pressed again in the row's Options. Every sets the gap, from 5 milliseconds to a minute. Vary by up to adds a random plus or minus to each gap, and Stop after ends it after a number of times. I would start with a gap of a few seconds and test it in a note before any real app. The emergency stop, Control Option Command period, ends it at once.
Test the repeat in a blank note first, so a wrong setting types into nothing that matters.
What it cannot do
- Fill fields one by one. It types into whatever has the focus, so a form needs Tab keys between fields, which a macro can add.
- Get around a game's rules. Spamming chat or messages breaks many games' and services' rules.
- Type into a secure field. macOS blocks typed input in some password fields.
The short version
- A phrase. Text Replacements in System Settings, Keyboard.
- A sentence on a key. A Type Text row in InputConfig.
- The same text on a timer. The same row, set to Repeats until pressed again.
For keys instead of text, the auto key presser does the same with single keys. Pick the smallest tool that types what you need.
